If you’re taking a trip to the beach, Europe, or some other exciting destination this summer, it can be hard to resist posting about your upcoming trip on social media. However, remember that it’s never a good idea to let the world know that your home will be empty and unprotected for an extended period of time. If you just can’t resist humble-bragging about your trip (and honestly, who could?) here are some ways to inform your circle without putting yourself and your property at risk.
Most social media platforms can be set to only show posts to people on your friends’ lists, and no one else. If you’re not already using that feature, now’s the best time to change it. There’s no telling who might fall under the category of “a friend of a friend.” Some people add connections who they haven’t known in years, or never knew at all.
Like we said, the smartest course of action is not to announce your trip at all. But if you can’t resist, try to be as vague as possible about the details. Don’t post a quirky picture of your boarding pass—this lets thieves know exactly when and where you’ll be during the listed time. Instead of saying “can’t wait for our trip this July!” say “can’t wait for our upcoming vacation!” or “looking forward to getting away this summer!” The terms “upcoming” and “vacation” cast a much wider net than “July.”
It’s not unheard of for thieves to browse Facebook and Instagram searching the “vacation” hashtag for a potential victim. If you post about your trip (which, again, you should not, but we get it) don’t use a hashtag that anyone could search. If you absolutely must communicate via pound sign, something like #JennaGoesToParis is much better than #VacationPlans.
Firstly, go to your settings and disable your location services so no one can figure out where you are. Secondly, resist the urge to use the “check-in” option throughout your trip. Sure, you’ll want to make sure a few friends and family members always know the last place you were in case you disappear. (Sorry. But, it happens.) With that said, it’s best to keep that information private.
When you’ve spent all this money and time on your vacation, it’s only natural to want to share your adventure with other people. But remember that no one outside of your close friends and family actually needs to know how much fun you’re having. Also, we hate to be blunt, but no one actually cares that you’re having the time of your life in Bora Bora. Be honest, do you like looking at your friends’ holiday adventures while you’re stuck at the office?
Instead of spending time and energy sharing your trip in real time, turn off the social media and enjoy every moment as much as possible. Capture the memories so that you can relive them later, but don’t be so worried about documenting special moments that you don’t experience them at all. Once you’re home safe, you can post about everything that happened without worrying that someone will break into your home.
